I approached this show not knowing entirely what to expect. Jimmy Eat World has been around for more than twenty years, rising to popularity in the early 2000s amidst the "Blink-182s" and the "Yellowcards" of the world, and they have been consistently releasing new music over the years that keeps its fanbase thriving. Upon entering the venue, I realized I was in for a unique evening.

Jimmy Eat World stopped at Ace of Spades in Sacramento, CA with the up-and-coming Pennsylvania pop-punk band Beach Slang. This was a special night for any fan of Jimmy Eat World, as their setlist featured numerous hits from their two decades of playing music, including new tracks from their latest release, “Integrity Blues.” The venue was full of fans young and old, including some kids as young as seven and eight listening with their parents. The audience was lively and excited, singing along perfectly to every song, louder than vocalist Jim Adkins.

Jimmy Eat World played about a two hour set. With only one other band playing before them, they had plenty of time to perform a myriad of songs from different eras of the band, in addition to chatting with the audience between songs. Their set flowed from energized rock to classic pop-punk, all the way to more melodic slow songs. It was evident that their fans loved it - there was jumping, moshing, crowdsurfing, fist pumping, even slow dancing at one point. Even as their set came to a close, the audience did not falter. As some of their most popular songs, “The Middle” and “Sweetness,” were played for the encore, the crowd was relentless in singing every lyric and head-banging to every beat.

A rock show for the ages, Jimmy Eat World has definitely not faded over time. Their fans stay loyal to their music. The new releases like Integrity Blues are honest to the original sound, while being striking and refreshing at the same time.
